Our History
We are a Presbyterian church in the historic Reformed tradition, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
What we believe
We live in a university town and a world that is both beautiful and broken. Jesus lived, died, rose from the dead and is coming back to make this city and world wonderfully new. It is Knox’s aim, in the way we live, work, study, play, sleep and even die, to give our city a foretaste of what Jesus has solemnly sworn to do. So, our biggest question is not how Jesus is relevant to our lives. Our question is how our lives are relevant to what Jesus has done, is doing and will do.
In a culture that believes you get what you earn and compete for, we believe all is ultimately of the undeserved grace of Jesus, from first to last. We live a life in a world, neither of which we created. In every way in which our lives fall short of the sheer glory of God (aka “sin”), we are forgiven and cleansed by grace alone. And Jesus promises a new, remade world, all by grace alone. This grace changes everything about the way we live now.
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC)
We are a Presbyterian church in the historic Reformed tradition. We subscribe to the great Ecumenical creeds of the universal church—the Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed and Athanasian Creed. But we also subscribe to the Westminster Standards. These documents, from the 17th century, define our beliefs as Presbyterians within the context of the historic Christian faith.
We are part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) denomination.
Knox’s Story
It begins with conversations in the late 1970s, when a group of people started to pray and think seriously about planting a church in Ann Arbor. These conversations took shape when families began to meet regularly in the living room in anticipation of a new church starting in Ann Arbor.
The first worship service of Knox was held at Tappan Middle School on September 13th, 1992. We had no idea how many people were going to be there. There were 410 people in attendance.
Rapid growth in the congregation over a relatively short period was encouraging and challenging – encouraging to see others joining us in following Jesus; challenging that as a relatively new church, we had to consider building a campus to accommodate our growing church family.
In January 2000, we moved to our current location on Wagner Road as we outgrew the space at Tappan Middle School. Since then, many people have been equipped at Knox and gone to places around the globe to live out a gospel that impacts every dimension of life.
God has been so kind and faithful to our church community, and we love being a part of what He’s doing here in Ann Arbor and beyond.
